Screaming Frog at a Glance

Screaming Frog SEO Spider is the industry-standard technical SEO crawler, trusted by agencies and in-house teams worldwide. It excels at finding the structural and technical issues that affect how search engines index your site:

  • Broken links, redirect chains, and crawl errors that waste crawl budget
  • Missing or duplicate title tags, meta descriptions, and H1s across every page
  • Canonical issues and hreflang problems that cause indexation confusion
  • XML sitemap validation to ensure search engines find all your pages
  • Internal linking analysis that reveals orphan pages and link equity distribution
  • Response codes and server errors across your entire domain

It is a desktop application that gives you complete control over how your site is crawled — custom extraction rules, configurable crawl speed, JavaScript rendering via Chrome, and exports to every format imaginable. For traditional SEO audits, Screaming Frog is the tool the industry trusts, and for good reason.

AIVerdict at a Glance

AIVerdict is an AI Search Optimization (AIO) platform that measures how AI systems — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — discover, understand, and recommend your website. Instead of checking how Google indexes your pages, it scores both halves of AI visibility: CORE (whether AI assistants can find, read, and extract from your site) and AURA (whether they actually mention, cite, and recommend your brand on real user queries).

AIVerdict scores your site across 10 dimensions, split between two rings plus a Risk modifier:

CORE — onsite readiness:

  • Training Access: Does robots.txt allow AI training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, etc.)?
  • Agent Access: Can live AI assistants reach your pages without being blocked, walled, or stalled by JavaScript?
  • Content Quality: LLM-based semantic analysis of clarity, structure, and citation readiness — can AI understand what you offer?
  • Answerability: Are answers extractable as FAQs, tables, definitions, and how-to steps?
  • Extractability: How confidently AI can pull specific facts out of your pages — affects whether you get verbatim citations or vague paraphrases when AI references your brand.

AURA — offsite presence (live brand-blind probes against ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity):

  • AI Brand Recognition: Do AI systems already know your brand without grounding?
  • Share of Voice: How often you appear on category-defining queries vs competitors.
  • Citation Depth: Whether AI cites your own pages or talks about you using third-party sources.
  • Alignment: Whether third-party content mirrors your brand's positioning.
  • Competitive Rank: Where AI ranks you relative to category leaders.

A Risk modifier subtracts from AURA when controversies, lawsuits, or trust issues surface in AI responses.

What Screaming Frog Can't Tell You

Screaming Frog is exceptional at what it does, but it was designed for the era of search engine crawlers and ranked results. It doesn't answer the questions that matter for AI visibility:

  • "Is ChatGPT recommending my client's site?" — Screaming Frog doesn't check AI bot access policies or whether your content appears in AI training datasets. You could be blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot in robots.txt without knowing it.
  • "Can AI extract answers from our content?" — There is no answerability scoring. A page might have great information buried in dense paragraphs that AI systems can't parse into direct answers.
  • "Can live AI agents actually use our site?" — Screaming Frog crawls for indexing patterns; it doesn't simulate what happens when ChatGPT browse, Perplexity, or Gemini try to fetch a page in real time and run into anti-bot challenges, slow response budgets, or consent overlays. Those silent failures are invisible in a traditional SEO crawl.
  • "Does AI recognize our brand?" — No authority signals for AI systems. Whether your brand appears in Wikipedia, Common Crawl training data, or is recognized by AI models is outside Screaming Frog's scope.
  • "What should we fix first for AI visibility?" — Without AI-powered content analysis, there's no prioritized roadmap for improving how AI systems understand and recommend your site.

These aren't criticisms of Screaming Frog — it was built to solve the Google problem, and it solves it brilliantly. AIVerdict was built to solve the AI problem. They're different questions entirely.

What AIVerdict Can't Tell You

Transparency matters, and AIVerdict has clear limitations that Screaming Frog handles with ease:

  • AIVerdict doesn't crawl your entire site. It audits your homepage and up to 8 strategically selected subpages. If you need to check every URL on a 50,000-page domain, that's a Screaming Frog job.
  • No broken link detection or redirect chain analysis. Finding 404s, 302-to-301 chains, and orphan pages requires a full-site crawl.
  • No Core Web Vitals or page speed scoring beyond basic server response time. Lighthouse and Screaming Frog's PageSpeed integration are the right tools for performance audits.
  • No hreflang or international SEO checks. Multi-language site configuration is entirely outside AIVerdict's scope.
  • No internal linking analysis. Link equity distribution, anchor text analysis, and click depth mapping require a full crawl.
  • No competitor backlink comparison. AIVerdict doesn't analyze link profiles.

For a complete picture of your site's health — both for traditional search and AI search — you need both tools.

The Agency Use Case

For SEO agencies, the most effective workflow combines both tools in a structured sequence:

  1. Run Screaming Frog for a technical SEO baseline — fix broken links, redirect chains, missing metadata, and crawl errors first.
  2. Run AIVerdict for an AI visibility baseline — identify blocked AI bots, missing entity definitions, poor answerability, and JS-rendering issues.
  3. Fix critical issues from both audits — Screaming Frog fixes improve Google rankings, AIVerdict fixes improve AI recommendations.
  4. Use AIVerdict's scheduled monitoring to track AI readiness monthly and catch regressions before they affect AI citations.
  5. Include both scores in client reports — Google health and AI visibility side by side.

AIVerdict's white-label PDF exports and scheduled monitoring are built specifically for agencies managing multiple client sites. Schedule monthly reports, organize clients into groups, and deliver branded deliverables — all from a single dashboard.
